Apply to Dataquest’s Diversity Scholarship Pilot Program
At Dataquest, one of our long-term goals is to make data science skills more affordable and accessible to everyone. This year on International Women’s Day we announced we were exploring new diversity initiatives, and now we’re launching the first of these: a pilot program for a Dataquest diversity scholarship.
For this pilot program, we’re focusing on a broad segment of the population that is currently underrepresented in the data science industry: people who identify as female, nonbinary, or gender non-conforming.
To encourage more people from these groups to learn data science skills, we’re offering successful applicants two free months of Dataquest Basic subscription access. Our data suggest that with that level of time and access, students can go from zero coding knowledge to completing a significant portion of our Data Analyst paths in Python or R.
Applications are due by end-of-day May 8 (AoE).
Successful applicants will be notified via email by May 17, so if you haven’t heard from us by May 18, you weren’t selected for this round. (However, we’ll be offering additional scholarships in the future, and we’d love you to apply to those even if you aren’t selected this time around).
Frequently Asked Questions
How will applications be assessed?
We’ll be looking at applications with the goal of choosing applicants who will benefit the most from being selected. That said, there are no wrong answers to our application questions, and you won’t be judged on anything irrelevant like spelling or grammar — we’re only looking at the content of your answers.
All we ask is that you please answer honestly.
What are my chances of being accepted?
Since this is our first-ever scholarship, we aren’t sure! We plan to award dozens of scholarships, but we don’t know yet how many applications we will receive.
What exactly will successful applicants receive?
Successful applicants will be given two months of Dataquest access at our Basic subscription tier. This grants access to all of the courses and guided projects in our Data Analyst in Python and Data Analyst in R paths. Dataquest students can complete courses and projects in any order they’d like, and they can also switch easily between the Python and R paths, or complete both.
We expect that a dedicated student coming into the program with no prior knowledge of programming will be able to make major progress on one or both of these paths within the two month scholarship window.
Like all students with a Basic subscription, scholarship students will also have access to our top-tier support so that they can get questions and technical problems resolved quickly.
Why aren’t you giving away Premium scholarships or yearly access?
There are two reasons for this.
First, we want this data science scholarship to be a long-term program, and we want it to make a real impact. Starting with a smaller-scale, shorter-term program allows us to collect data and feedback more quickly about what’s working and what isn’t working, so that we can make subsequent iterations of the program more effective. Limiting this pilot program to two months means that we’ll be able to start collecting feedback and data by the end of July. Getting quicker feedback allows us to iterate more quickly, and we think that in the long run, this will help us build a scholarship program that genuinely makes a difference in the lives of students.
Second, offering a smaller-scale scholarship allows us to help a greater number of students. Having more students in the program will help us collect more meaningful data about its effectiveness. Dataquest is a small company that’s entirely funded by our students’ subscription payments, so we want to make sure that what we’re doing is actually helping underrepresented groups get a foothold in the data science industry before we expand its scope.
I don’t identify as female, nonbinary, or gender non-conforming. Can I still apply for this scholarship?
For this initial pilot program, we are focused only on those who identify as female, nonbinary, or gender non-conforming. In the future, however, we hope to expand the scholarship program to cover other groups that are underrepresented in the data science community. If you have a Dataquest account, you will automatically be notified about new scholarship opportunities as they arise. If you don’t have an account, you can sign up for one here (it’s free).
I don’t need a scholarship myself, but how can I help?
The best thing you can do is to share this link with anyone you think might be interested before the application deadline on May 8. You can also help spread the word about this opportunity by sharing it on your social media channels.
